Le Romain experienced something of a meteoric rise to prominence during the recent Autumn Carnival, and has returned to competition this time for consecutive second-place finishes in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) and Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m).

Having also confirmed the Hard Spun gelding in the field for Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and a likely collision course with champion mare Winx, Lees stated on his website that he is confident the four-year-old can win the Cameron Handicap 2016.

“At this stage, Le Romain is running in the Cameron,” Lees said.

“He would be running only for second at Randwick (behind Winx).

“But it is definitely not going to be an easy task here. I’ve got great respect for Kim Waugh‘s His Majesty and also John O’Shea‘s Chetwood.

Le Romain’s major spring target is the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 1st, and Lees conceded that the four-year-old will likely be charged with carrying topweight if he wins the Cameron Handicap.

“If he won the Cameron, there’s every likelihood he would get top weight for the Epsom at Randwick on October 1,” he said.

Le Romain returned to racing this year for success in a Randwick minor over 1000m on January 23rd, before running a close second behind Spill The Beans in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later.

Again finishing second behind Press Statement in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m), Le Romain turned the tables with an impressive start-to-finish performance to beat the champion colt in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 5th.

Having ended his autumn preparation seventh in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), Le Romain is drawn ideally in barrier 3 with Christian Reith in the saddle and is currently available at 2016 Cameron Handicap odds of $3.20 with online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
