2015 Cameron Handicap Ideal for Countryman

September 16th, 2015

Trainer Gai Waterhouse has been thrilled with the results posted by Countryman this time in, and is confident his success over a talent-rich field at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday will go a long way towards success in the 2015 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle on September 18th.

Jumping from the gates well, Countryman settled in ideal running position on the heels of the Jockey Celebration Day BM90 (1300m), who set a fair tempo away from the barriers and approaching the bend.

Rounding onto the final straight just off the pace of Howmuchdoyouloveme, the Royal Academy gelding mustered a monumental turn of foot to comfortably overcome the field of nine; hitting the line close to two lengths in the clear of Turbulent Jet.

Waterhouse was understandably thrilled with the performance produced by Countryman and is confident a race like the 2015 Cameron Handicap is both well within his capabilities and should play directly into his strengths this time.

“It was a very solid tempo up front and he got into his rhythm,” Waterhouse said after the race.

“It played into his hand. James (McDonald) got off the other day and said it topped him off beautifully.

“He’s always been a very solid Saturday-class horse and he was just too good for them.”

Countryman is no stranger to black type racing in Newcastle, but Waterhouse is confident he is in a far-better position for success than his most recent effort for seventh in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) in March this year.

Posting an impressive five wins and seven minors through eighteen career starts so far, Countryman returned in January for success in the Testa Rossa @ Vinery SW (1300m); progressing to minors in the TAB Rewards BM90 (1500m) and Crown Castle BM85 (1400m) prior to the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap.

Yet to confirm a specific path for the five-year-old, Countryman will likely contest two more Metro Saturday races prior to the 2015 Cameron Handicap on September 18th.
