Mr Chard Eyeing Epsom Berth with Cameron Handicap Win

September 16th, 2014

Suffering a severe suspensory injury in the early stages of 2013, leading to nearly 18 months on the sidelines, trainer Tony McEvoy has revealed he will strongly consider a Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) berth for lightly-raced seven-year-old Mr Chard should he convincingly win Wednesday’s Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle.

Securing four wins and five minor places from just 26 competitive starts so far, Mr Chard has returned to racing in close to career-best form over the early stages of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival; finishing second in a minor over 1100m first-up before finishing a head off the pace of Group 1 winner Tiger Tees in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) on August 9th and winning the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) most recently on August 21st.

Understandably thrilled with the form and class displayed buy the Al Samer entire since returning to the track, McEvoy told AAP he is not convinced the veteran is capable of returning to Group 1 form for the 2014 Epsom Handicap, but conceded he it may figure a plausible option should he perform well again tomorrow.

“I’m not sure that he can come back and compete at the Group One level as a seven-year-old,” McEvoy said.

“I put him in the Epsom dreaming a little bit I suppose, which you’ve got to do in this business.

“If he came out and won the Cameron impressively, it’s a free entry into the Epsom and we’d have to strongly consider it.”

Beginning his racing tenure under the guidance of trainer Dean Lawson prior to his suspensory injury, Mr Chard was a standout performer over the late stages of 2010 and early 2011 most notably; winning the Listed Hoyts Food-Spices Stakes (1400m) on October 16th and the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) before finishing fourth in the 2011 edition of the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m). is currently offering the best odds on all races at Newcastle this weekend including the Cameron Handicap, for which Mr Chard is currently available at odds of $4.20; featuring as the sole occupant of the first line of betting.

Mr Chard is also currently available in early betting markets for the 2014 Epsom Handicap at a particularly generous quote of $41 for success.
